Our Services
Neuropsychological Evaluations
NJCANS offers comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and young adults, beginning at age 6. Evaluations may be indicated for individuals with learning and/or academic concerns, attentional issues, communication concerns, behavioral challenges, and medical/neurological concerns affecting cognition. We provide evaluations typically centered around:
IQ testing
organizational skills weaknesses
attention and executive functioning (e.g., ADHD)
language and communication (e.g., dyslexia, writing disorders)
nonverbal learning differences (e.g., dyscalculia)
medical conditions that impact learning (e.g., chemotherapy/radiation, concussion),
psychopathology
other mental health challenges impacting cognition.
Evaluations at NJCANS also include ongoing support for implementation of academic interventions in collaboration with schools, learning specialists, and healthcare providers, to ensure that each patient’s specific recommendations are implemented and followed.
Sports Psychology
NJCANS provides evidence-based mental support for optimal performance of athletes and other performers. As a previous collegiate athlete, I understand, first-hand, how important the mental and emotional aspects of athletic performance are. Services are provided, in-person and virtually, to the New Jersey and New York City areas. Our sports psychology services typically include:
Individual sports psychology sessions
Individual sports psychology sessions include psychological counseling, mental training, and executive coaching. We espouse an eclectic and holistic approach to the mental aspects of sports performance, grounded in evidence-based psychotherapy practices including cognitive-behavioral therapy. Additionally, sport-specific mental training programs are provided to help each athlete mentally and emotionally perform up to their optimal abilities.
Individual injury/return-to-sport sessions
Dealing with injuries is one of the most challenging aspects of being an athlete. Through implementation of mental coping strategies, we help athletes effectively manage negative emotions, so that they can better focus on the physical aspects of their recovery.
Parent support sessions
It may be challenging to deal with the mental and emotional aspects of your child’s athletic career. Parent-support sessions help to better understand your child’s emotional needs, and develop effective tools to support your child in achieving their athletic goals.
Concussion Evaluations & Treatment
NJCANS provides comprehensive evaluations and treatment plans to individuals who have sustained a suspected concussion and are experiencing concussion symptoms (e.g., headaches, dizziness, memory issues). This includes neurocognitive testing, as well as a targeted treatment plan to expedite your recovery. We specialize in treating both acute and post-concussion syndrome, and are experts in resolving your concussion through a targeted and empirically supported treatment approach. We are not satisfied with your recovery until you are normal (e.g., free of physical, emotional, and cognitive concussion symptoms). In addition to current and former athletes, we work with individuals throughout to the lifespan (6 years old and up). Our concussion evaluations and treatment plans typically include:
Neuropsychological testing (e.g., computerized ImPACT testing, concussion related neuropsychological batteries) to evaluate and quantify the cognitive effects of the injury
Concussion-related screening measures (e.g., vestibular and oculomotor testing, concussion self-report measures)
Referrals for additional concussion-related treatments (e.g., vestibular therapy, neuro-optometry, psychotherapy, psychiatry)
Individualized, return-to-play treatment plans
Individualized, academic and work-related accommodations
Concussion Baseline and Post-Injury Testing
NJCANS provides baseline and post-injury neurocognitive testing to local sports teams and athletes. For athletes, it is critical to have a pre-injury snapshot of their healthy cognitive functioning, from which to compare if they are concussed. Additionally, we also deliver post-injury neurocognitive testing to evaluate and quantify the cognitive effects of a concussion. Baseline and post-injury testing helps to improve diagnostic accuracy, promotes safety, and guides both school and return-to-play protocols. Currently, for athletes, ImPACT testing is the preferred tool for baseline and post-injury computerized neurocognitive testing.
